New van registrations show no sign of slowing

Once again the commercial sector of the UK motor industry was the star performer in September 2011. Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that van sales were up yet again as businesses continued to take out van insurance online on new vehicles.

250,000 figure surpassed

With a combined total of over 38,000 sales in September, van registrations in September were up by 9% compared to September 2010. The rolling year figures were even more impressive, up by 18% on a year on year basis but more pointedly over the quarter of a million mark which will be seen as a benchmark in the industry for the next 12 months. It is a far cry from the annual sales figures of just four years ago but certainly indicates that businesses across the UK are still prepared to provide their companies with the tools to do the job.

Trucks also pick up sales

Pick up trucks and larger vans enjoyed a particularly good month with both showing improvements of over 20% but all sections of the trade with the exception of light commercial vehicles experienced gains. In fact truck registrations also did very well in September. They were up by 3.5% on September 2010 and so far this year 29,620 new vehicles have now been covered with commercial vehicle insurance. The rolling year figures show an increase of 30% and all in all there seems little chance of sales going backwards for the rest of 2011.

SMMT boss quick to praise commercial sector

Paul Everitt, the chief executive of SMMT, fully expects van registrations to actually increase in the run up to January 2012 when the London Low Emission Zone is extended to include thousands of vans that had previously been exempt. He once more praised the commercial sector for its resilience and suggested Government help for the industry would not go amiss.

Ford still number one

Ford once more sold more vans than anyone else but marked improvements by Volkswagen up by 26% and Nissan up by an incredible 60% show that Vauxhall cannot be complacent about their second position in the rankings for much longer.
