Electric Kangoo

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Recently we have blogged a lot about commercial vans that run on alternative fuels and today, in keeping with the current theme, we are again thinking about those vans that are running on different fuels.

Renault Revolution

Last week we explained how electric vans were undergoing trials in Germany and that they were performing very well indeed. However, my concern was whether they would suit the everyday van drivers schedule as they have a limited range.

Well, it seems that Renault have been hard at work in pushing out their new electric powered Kangoo ZE. It is due to roll out on our streets in the North East this week.

Benfield Renault, in Newcastle, was chosen by the French manufacturer to be the number one retailer and supplier of the groundbreaking electric vehicle.

Hopes are High

They are hopeful that the electric van will sell well amongst small to medium sized businesses, and they are also hoping, in particular, that tradesman, such as plumbers for example, will be interested in the light commercial vehicle.

Of course, the government is now also offering a subsidy of up to 20% on the price, and Renault are also confident that other factors, including the relatively cheap running of the vehicle, lower tax and a pretty reasonable van insurance quote, will further attract potential customers.

History of Great Vans

Furthermore, we know Renault make great vans and the Kangoo has already won the prize for the 2012 Van of the Year, so we have no doubts that the electric Kangoo will sell well and become a regular appearance on our streets in future years.

Mark Squires, Chief Executive at Benfield, is looking forward to getting the Kangoo ZE on the streets: “This is fantastic news for Benfield Renault and our customers. As a family-owned business, we are delighted to be at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution, and to be chosen to retail the first commercially available electric van to hit Newcastle is very exciting and a piece of history in the making.”

Meanwhile, UK Managing Director, Thierry Sybord, has been saying: “I’m delighted to see Benfield embracing this new era of electric transport.” All at Renault are unsurprisingly very excited to see the Kangoo ZE finally being offered to customers.

Vans Can Often be Favoured Over Cars

Monday, January 16th, 2012

If you’re reading this blog, you probably own a van, or you are indeed thinking of buying a van, which is great, however that also probably means you need your van every day for business purposes. Well, not all vans are owned by those that need them for delivering goods or shifting around heavy loads. Sometimes, you come across those that simply drive a van for the fun of driving a van, instead of a regular road car.

Car or Van?

It’s a true story that a close friend of mine once owned a van simply because they preferred the way it drove, the way they could go anywhere in it without worry of it being dinged by someone else or even stolen and because it was so practical; they used to load it up after a long day shopping.

I remember the van well, it was a W-reg Citroën Berlingo that had clearly been bashed about by previous owners, but the little Berlingo just soldiered on, without a care in the world. It was a brilliant little van with just two seats in the front, a gearstick, a steering wheel, and that’s about it. Simple, straightforward motoring.

It was light too, with a 1.6 litre engine that anyone could rev hard without worry of it failing, and when carrying particularly heavy duty goods or tools in the back you would need to rev it hard to get it to move! But that was fine because it would happily comply without any struggle or strain.

Economical Too

It was a pretty economical little run-a-round as well, as its 1.6 litre diesel engine would produce 149g/km of CO2 emissions, which isn’t bad at all by standards from around a decade ago and it rarely seemed to need a fill at the diesel pump. Berlingo’s have even been used as police vans, not just in the UK, but overseas also, so it must be pretty nippy too in the event of them having to give chase.

Furthermore, it seems that a van insurance quote can indeed be cheaper than just normal car insurance as the van is likely to be valued lower than a car with an equivalent engine capacity. Insurers may also see a van as a vehicle with less risk attached, the fact that they have fewer seats than normal cars may be a big factor in deciding the price of the insurance. This is because the fewer people that could potentially get hurt, the lower the insurance quote may be. That isn’t to say however, that a two-seater sports car will be cheaper to insure than a four-seater family hatchback.

If you drive a van but do not need it for business use, then why not let us know!

Dodge Ram Van

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Fancy a beefy American commercial vehicle, with an 8.0 litre V10 engine at the front and rear wheel drive?

Well plans to build a new Dodge Ram commercial van are underway, however, I’m afraid those aforementioned figures will not come as standard, far from it in fact. The 8.0 litre V10 is of course a specification engine you can get in an ordinary Ram pickup truck, I use the word “ordinary” loosely!

Plans Revealed

Chrysler and Fiat CEO, Sergio Marchionne has revealed plans that the company has a desire to expand its assembly plant in Mexico in order to produce Ram commercial vehicles. The Mexican plant currently produces Ram1500 light duty pickups and heavy duty pickups which of course have proven to be extremely popular in the United States during the past two decades.

This is a great step for Chrysler and Marchionne has been quoted saying: “Hopefully it will become the centre for production of light commercial vehicles in North America for us.” It’s sure to lead to the company becoming inundated with orders for the Dodge Ram van, and an influx of those lucky people that get to own one looking for a van insurance quote.

Ducato Similarities

The commercial van will however, not be rear wheel drive, but front wheel drive and it will likely be fitted with a much smaller engine to the one mentioned above. In fact, the Ram will be based on the Fiat Ducato so expect to see many similarities with the Italian commercial van. The Ram is also expected to launch in 2013, provided the plans do indeed go ahead without any interruptions.

Speaking about the fact that the Ram will be based on the Ducato, Marchionne added: “It’s a unique vehicle, it’s incredibly successful in Europe. It’s designed perfectly to try and deal with the segment here in the United States.” He definitely has high hopes, and so he should.

Ford vs. Chrysler

The American market looks set to receive a number of European style vans over coming years as the Transit is of course to be produced there as well from 2013 onwards.

So it currently looks like the Transit and the Ram will be in direct competition with each other from next year onwards; Ford and Chrysler are however no strangers to one another.

Make sure you inform the insurance company that the van needs to be covered for business use as well as personal. This is to make it clear that the insurer will pay for any damages made though natural wear and tear.

The tax disc is not just a piece of paper

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

All vehicles on the road have to be taxed and insured by some sort of vehicle insurance, whether it’s a single person driving a mini or a company with a fleet of vans covered on commercial vehicle insurance, the law is the same. The vehicle Tax Disc came about after the Acts of 1919 and 20 which laid down specifications for the first Tax Discs and exactly how they had to be displayed. It was classed as proof that payment of the Road Fund Licence had been made and so the Tax Disc that we know today was born. For the years 1921/22, Tax Discs compared to todays were really quite basic.  They were on plain grey paper with black ink and had simple instructions on the back, some even had adverts and they had no perforations making it difficult to fit a square tax disc into a round holder. 1923 saw the introduction of a colour for each year which helped enforcing agencies to quickly notice if a vehicle had a disc which was out of date. In the early years, all Tax Discs purchased during a year ran out December 31st. The  system of December 31st expiry remained for many years and would cause big problems at the issuing offices because they would struggle to cope with the enormous task of renewing all the new tax discs in the short time  between  Christmas and New Year as they all ran out at the same time. A major innovation happened in 1938 when the introduction of perforations around the outside of the tax disc made it much easier to fit into its round holder.

Changes to all aspects of the Tax Disc and its administration happened in 1961. In a big effort to make life harder for forgers, a new design was launched which consisted of various circular vignettes along with bands of solid colour, with another change being the half tone background. Also monthly taxation was at last brought in to get away from the heavy load of the December 31st expiry date. From January onwards it was possible to buy a year’s car tax at any time. But the attempt to beat the forger proved to be slightly off target as the years of 61/62 turned out to be relatively straight forward to amend and even Guinness bottle labels were being used to evade payment. Because of this in 1963, an extra expiry date was added and this put an end to this practice. This design was to stay for the next 15 years until May 1978.

1978′s new style Tax Disc design showed the whole expiry date in large print on top of  a coloured band, repeated in toned colour further down on the Tax Disc. This type lasted until August 1987. The first of the ‘wavy line’ design Tax disc began in September 1987, after another round in the eternal battle with the forgers. The disc now had thin parallel wavy lines with a superimposed expiry date. By 2001, the design had got even more complex, and made on water marked paper. However, still the battle with the forger goes on, and in October, 2003, a star shaped perforation with gold foils, bar codes and even holograms have been added.
