Ford has released details and photos of all the new models that will be in the new Transit range. The unveiling of the new two tonne Transit and Transit Connect occurred during the Go Further event by Ford in Amsterdam.
The Transit Custom which is one tonne was announced in April of this year and will be sold from October. The other Transit’s in the range will join this van sometime in 2013 and will both be two tonnes. The Custom is a front-wheel drive and a short or long wheelbase.
The new Transit will be wider and will be rear or all-wheel drive as well as a range of chassis cabs and chassis cowls to choose from.
The Transit looks very different to the Custom externally which could be due to it replacing the E-Series in North America towards the end of next year. This could be the reason for the large grille which looks to have come from the F-150. The engine in this van will be different depending on if it is sold in the US or in Europe. In Europe the engine will be a 2.2 litre diesel. In America the engine will be 3.5 litre V6 petrol. The Transit’s that are being built for Europe will continue being built in Turkey and for the US both the Transit and Connect will be built in Kansas City.
The Connect is the smallest of the new commercial vehicles in the range. This too has been completely redesigned and now looks like a much smaller Custom. The van will be available in short and long wheelbase and will also come with the option of two different roof heights. The engine size for the Connect has not been revealed yet. This van will probably have the cheaper commercial vehicle insurance quote of the three as we expect the engine to be a lot smaller than the others.
Barb Samardzich is the vice president of product development for Ford of Europe and she has said, “These new products will carry more, work harder, last longer and cost our customers less to operate; just as Ford Transits have done for 47 years. The unprecedented launch of two all-new Transit models will extend Ford’s leadership in serving commercial vehicle customers around the world. Our new global Ford Transit products will be totally fit for purpose. These are the strongest, most capable and most efficient commercial vans we have ever built; this is the start of a new chapter in the Transit success story.”
