Police urge van drivers to leave nothing inside the vehicle at night

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Police are convinced that an organised group of criminals are behind the recent increase in vans being broken into. Tools have been top of the list of stolen items but police think others have been broken into in the hope that there would be packages for delivery still in the vehicles.

Humberside Police have confirmed that ten work vans that are all unconnected have been broken into in the Pocklington and Wilberfoss areas within the last seven days. On each occasion, the thieves struck in the early hours of the morning and made away with all kinds of tools from the vans. Police have appealed to milkmen, dog-walkers and all other early risers to keep an eye open and to report any suspicious activity, no matter how small.

Sgt Rogers said: “It is clear that all of the incidents are being carried out by the same group who seem to be targeting the entire borough. We have for some time been telling business’s to tell all workers to bring their tools into the home when they arrive home each night. However, some are continuing to take the chance. Most workers have actually had to buy the tools themselves and now they will have to replace them out of their own pocket.”

The vehicles targeted included a Citroen Dispatch van, a white Peugeot van and a white Citroen Berlingo van. The police have spoken to all three companies and although the vans are protected by UK van insurance, the tools were the responsibility of the driver. As only the locks were damaged none of them will be claiming on the insurance, however, the owners of another van that was stolen will have to claim as thieves not only stole the van but then cut the floor out to allow them to steal man hole covers without getting out of the vehicle. They then abandoned the van after crashing it into a wall.

Online magazine launches alternative performance register

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

An online motoring magazine has taken up the mantel for car and van drivers who are unhappy with the fuel efficiency of their new vehicles.

There is no doubt that the purchase of a new vehicle is one of the biggest financial investments a person makes in their lifetime, and as such many people go to great lengths studying information given out by motor manufacturers on the performance of their models. For a driver of a van covered by commercial vehicle insurance it is even more important that he makes the correct choice of vehicle as his livelihood depends on it.

Honest John, the motoring magazine, are now setting up a “Real Life Economy Register” whereby drivers of cars and vans can report exactly what sort of fuel efficiency motorists can expect from their cars. A spokesman for the magazine explained that many readers felt cheated when the performance of their new purchase was nowhere near as good as the manufacturers claimed it would be, he said “The much misunderstood reason why most drivers cannot match the manufacturer figures is that these are actually lab tests designed to simulate driving conditions. Manufacturers optimise their engines for the prescribed lab tests.”

The news that drivers cannot take for granted the performance figures put out by manufacturers will come as a blow and many will question the legality of it, however, vehicle production companies are very careful how they word their advertising material. Magazine polls and interactive websites may well be a good alternative for prospective new buyers to ascertain the performance rating of their intended purchase.

Dirty vans no oil paintings but works of art just the same

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Bus driver Robert Burden is no stranger to working with vehicles covered by van insurance. Driving buses around the capital means he is using such a vehicle every day of his working life. It also appears that he spends a lot of his spare time working on similar if not quite as clean, vehicles.

The bus driver, originally from Devon, has turned an eye for an unusual artistic talent into a lucrative spare time business. Robert sees his fair share of dirty vehicles in his day job and he has started using them as a canvas to practice his unique talent. He creates drawings using specially designed pencils on the dirty vans.

The drawings are usually those of film stars, he has created stunning drawings of film stars Clint Eastwood, James Dean and Cary Grant and also used unkempt white vans to create astonishing likenesses of many rock stars. He has even created an epic wartime London Blitz scene on one van.

Now most van drivers are noticeably upset when their vans are used as drawing boards by the “clean me” street artists, but this is not the case with Robert. When asked about reactions to his work he said: “People are often truly moved, I’ve had people tell me: ‘It’s making art out of dirt – something that’s usually seen as bad.’ And ‘These drawings are urban expressions from living and working in London and are an amazing thing to do.”

The bus driver, who also turns his hand to wedding photography and more conventional drawings, accepts commissions starting from £70 for his handiwork on vehicles and is confident that he will get plenty of takers.
