New Mercedes Van to be Unveiled Later This Year

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

It appears that commercial enterprises in the small business sector may soon be organising commercial van insurance on a new Mercedes Benz, as the famous German manufacturer prepares to launch a new super mini van.

Already the luxury car manufacturer is well established in the commercial van sector with the Vito and the Sprinter, but the birth of a little brother who will be called Citan will open up a new market for Mercedes. The new mini van, whose name is taken from a mixture of the words City and Titan, is designed to be the ultimate urban run around and will suit a whole range of small businesses and delivery companies.

A company spokesman said: “We can now offer commercial drivers the chance to benefit from Mercedes Benz technology and engineering no matter what their business is. The three vans cover the main needs of commercial businesses across Europe.”

Mercedes plan to offer the van in a multitude of options saying not only will it offer generous load dimensions but will be compact in size to suit city needs. It also promises economy driving because of its low fuel consumption. The van will meet the latest CO2 emission directives from the EU via a range of petrol and diesel engines and there will also be a Blue Efficiency package and of course, a battery-powered version will be available shortly after the launch.

Mercedes say the small van is based on the engineering that has made their bigger vans so successful and it will have safety features such as ESP stability control fitted as standard. As with the larger Vito and Sprinter vans, the Citan will be available in a wide range of body styles, lengths and payload capacities when it goes on sale in Europe towards the end of the summer this year.

Ambulance conversion rings alarm bells on Merseyside

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Health workers on Merseyside are feeling the effects of government cuts already, as paramedics are being asked to operate in what some see as unsuitable vehicles to serve the public. Vans that were originally designed for work that would require commercial vehicle insurance for the operator, are now being converted to carry even more precious cargo.

Health workers union, Unison, say that ambulance chiefs at the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) have made conditions difficult for paramedics to operate in, as they have started converting vans into makeshift ambulances. The NWAS admitted that four vans had been turned into ambulances already and fully expected to use more in the future. The union believe the main reason for this is that the converted vans are a much cheaper option than buying the modular Mercedes ambulances that are the standard vehicle for the NWAS.

Although Unison objects to the introduction of the vans, they are working constructively with the NWAS to make them as suitable as possible. A spokesman for the union said “We have opposed the introduction of van conversions over existing modular vehicles from the outset, due to reduced working space and their comparatively cramped layout. But, in the current economic climate, where cutbacks are already looming for NHS trusts across the UK, the £30,000 cost saving on the new van conversion in comparison to the modular Mercedes vehicles has proved a major factor in influencing management’s decision, senior union officials believe.”

A poll of paramedics showed that 57% of them were opposed to the introduction of the new vans but a NWAS spokesman defended the decision by saying “In the current environment, we must use resources as efficiently as possible, while ensuring the highest levels of patient care and safety.”

Mercedes launch the E-Cell

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Van drivers in the UK will be looking on with interest as their German counterparts take part in trials, which will see the launch of the first battery powered light commercial vehicle, that is factory built, on the roads of Europe.

Mercedes have unveiled the Vito E-Cell, and are trialing the silent, emission free vehicle in Germany over the next few months, before going into full factory production, which will see the green van all over the countries of the EU including the UK.

The vans being built in Spain, are based on the long wheel base version of the Vito, with one big difference besides that of the engine, the E-Cell is front wheel drive. Other features of the new van are sliding doors as well as a tailgate, cameras to assist the driver in reverse parking and electronic stability controls.

Weighing in at just over 3,000 kg and capable of carrying a 900 kg load, Mercedes claim the E-Cell Vito will be seven times cheaper to run than a standard model, with the prospect of owners saving even more, if they charge the lithium batteries at off-peak times. A fully charged vehicle will have a distance range of 80 miles and a top speed of 50 mph.

The company plan to have over 100 vans on the roads of Germany in the trial, and expect the vehicles to travel over 50,000 miles in their first four years. Over 2,000 vehicles will be produced next year, so in the very near future, van drivers in the UK can expect to be getting commercial vehicle insurance on an electric van.
