Technology Can Play a Big Part in Fighting Congestion in the Future

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

Fleet managers are being advised to embrace technology if they are to combat the increasing levels of congestion on the roads of the United Kingdom. The Department for Transport (DfT) predicts that by 2030, the number of vehicles on the road will have increased by between 25% and 30%.

The Automotive Council has published a report recognising the increasing role of intelligent transport systems used by fleets, such as real-time vehicle tracking and they also predict that these will need to interact with both new and emerging technologies. Nearly 84% of goods bought online are delivered using the UK’s road network by vans which are protected by commercial vehicle insurance and it is vital that the transport networks do not become clogged or gridlocked. Effective transport infrastructure, which enables drivers to move freely around the country, says the report, is a necessary ingredient of a successful economy.

Transport secretary Justine Greening said “We’re making great headway on the environmental impact of road transport. Improvements in fuel efficiency and the development of hybrid electric vehicles mean that, despite an increase in traffic, CO2 emissions are set to fall significantly over the next 25 years. But perhaps our biggest challenge, given its economic, environmental and social cost, is making sure we tackle congestion. That means we all need to focus on solutions – be they managing demand, enabling travellers to make more informed decisions about their journeys and making the best use of existing networks and capacity.”

Currently, the DfT is investing more than £1 billion to tackle areas of congestion and improve the national road network. This is on top of the £2.3bn planned investment in major roads that was recently announced in the ministry’s spending review. The Government is also collaborating with Innovits and MIRA at a research and development centre located in Nuneaton. The team of researchers hope to develop, test and refine future transport technologies. The report emphasises that increasing road capacity while tackling congestion requires everyone to use a more intelligent approach in managing the road network and the vehicles that ply their trade on it.

Fleet drivers are urged to buy fuel from supermarkets

Monday, October 31st, 2011

The seemingly ever increasing fuel cost is still at the top of the list of concerns for fleet managers. Research by the AA shows that more and more of them are instructing their drivers to only use supermarket fuel rather than going to the branded forecourts which are currently more expensive.

The price may only be a few pence cheaper but can make a huge difference to fleet fuel bills. The latest figures on fuel prices shows that the cheapest fuel continues to be found at the forecourts of the major supermarkets. The few pence saved on each litre of fuel means that a company van that is protected with commercial vehicle insurance could see a fuel cost saving of over £100 each year by filling up each time at a supermarket rather than branded outlets. This may not look like much of a saving but to a small firm it is very important. For much larger firms who may have a fleet of 200 vehicles, they can make a much larger saving by steering clear of garage forecourts.

The AA have also warned that some small firms in parts of rural Worcestershire could be forced to close if they do not switch to supermarket fuel. Figures show that Worcester drivers are now paying more now than when the national average peaked four months ago at 137.43p for petrol and 143.04p for diesel. The AA warned that September’s RPI inflation figure means that yet another eight pence may be added to the price of fuel within the next year. Some small firms are even asking workers who do not have a private car to use their own supermarket vouchers that give 5p off each litre of fuel when filling up the company vehicle.

A spokesman for the AA said: “If the Government isn’t prepared to tackle high oil and fuel prices and their drain on the nation’s well-being, it should at least commit to freezing fuel duty until petrol falls at least below 125p a litre and diesel below 130p. If not, even more small businesses, especially in rural areas will be driven off the road.”

Fleet tracking saving companies huge amounts of money

Monday, August 1st, 2011

Fleet vehicle tracking has become a vital part of their business for many companies and research shows that 73% of those using the technology have been doing so for more than five years.

Companies using the technology are delighted to be achieving a number of measurable cost efficiencies such as cutting fuel usage by 9%, overtime by 15% and communications overheads also by 15%. The survey contacted 250 fleet decision makers in the United Kingdom and they found that there was considerably greater use of vehicle tracking from companies who have vans protected by commercial vehicle insurance. When asked about the primary purpose for vehicle tracking, more than a third of the respondents using the technology stated productivity was the main reason for using it. However, it seems that fleets are achieving many benefits from their tracking system including reduced costs, better understanding of driver behaviour, increased security, better customer service, proof of delivery and an improved duty of care.

Stephen Rapicano, managing director at the survey company, said “Fuel costs and pressures to reduce operational overheads are currently the key challenges for a large number of fleet operators, with many now using vehicle tracking to help overcome these issues. This survey shows that businesses can achieve measurable benefits in terms of fleet performance, service and legislative compliance.”

It also seems that fleet managers are combining the tracking solutions with in-vehicle tools which enables them to maximise the operational performance of the system. For example, integrated satellite navigation systems are now being used by 55% of all tracking systems, while handheld PDAs are being used by almost all delivery fleets. As well as enabling cheap van insurance quotes, it is hoped the survey will provide an insight into the uptake of vehicle tracking amongst UK based businesses.

Tracker devices becoming more widespread

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

A recent survey revealed almost 40% of fleet drivers are unhappy with on-board technology which can accurately identify where they are on the roads of the United Kingdom. However, that figure jumps to a huge 93% who are happy to have a tracking device that helps police locate a vehicle when it is stolen.

ALD Automotive carried out the research and they found that despite big improvements in security by vehicle manufacturers, 300 are still being stolen in the UK each and every day, which equates to a car or van every five minutes. Luckily about half of stolen vehicles will be recovered, but had they all been fitted with a tracker, almost 92% would be returned to their rightful owner. The Ford Transit still remains at the top of a thief’s list.

Chief Inspector Mark Hooper said: “These figures demonstrate that vehicle crime continues to be an issue across the UK. Criminals will use a variety of means to steal vehicles, from towing them away or simply driving them off when owners leave the keys in the ignition to burgling houses and sophisticated attacks on manufacturers’ security systems.”

Many firms with fleets covered by commercial vehicle insurance are turning to telematics in an effort to drive down costs and benefit from vehicle tracking should one of their vans be stolen. One of the best known is Tracker which has been fitted to over one million vehicles. In the last eighteen years this technology has recovered about 21,000 stolen vehicles which have a combined total value of a staggering £440m. Currently it helps to recover £2m worth of stolen vehicles each month. The police have also been able to arrest more than 2,000 car thieves. Having a tracker device can be the difference between getting a vehicle and its contents back safely and being involved in a long drawn-out insurance claim.
