Swindon a Safe Haven for Motorists

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Van drivers pursuing their trade in and around the Wiltshire town of Swindon may find themselves getting lower commercial vehicle insurance quotes in the future as the town has been identified as the safest place in the UK for motorists.

In a nationwide survey based on figures supplied by the Department for Transport, insurance experts have discovered Swindon, which has a rate of just 2 accidents per thousand vehicles registered in the town, is the safest place in England. All the more surprising when one considers they were the first town in England to turn off their speed cameras.

It appears that the council’s decision to invest in alternative measures to improve road safety rather than the cameras hated by many motorists has been a roaring success. In the 6 months after the static cameras were switched off, not one major accident was reported in the town. A spokesman for the Taxpayers Alliance who has vigorously campaigned for the removal of speed cameras said: “This is more evidence that speed cameras are not the answer to making Britain’s roads safer. The cameras result in fines that represent a significant burden on drivers on the basis of how fast they are driving on one stretch of road, but we need a broader, more effective approach to road safety policy. Local authorities should follow Swindon’s example and move to focus on other road safety measures aside from speed.”

Further inspection of the report shows that van drivers in London are 45 times more liable to have a traffic accident of some kind as the capital came out worst in the report with 90 vehicles per thousand vehicles registered. Other good performers proved to be Bracknell Forest and West Berkshire while the worst provincial city turned out to be Nottingham.

New Mercedes Battery Van Lights up Geneva

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Mercedes-Benz have lit up the Geneva Motor Show for van enthusiasts by unveiling their VITO E-Cell crewbus.

There have been dozens of supercars and other top of the range vehicles stealing the limelight at the Geneva show this week but visitors interested in the commercial sector were delighted with the zero emission debut of the VITO E-Cell crewbus. Not only is it a world first from Mercedes-Benz Vans but the Vito E-CELL crewbus is the first seven-seater vehicle worldwide to offer local emission-free mobility as standard. With a range of around 100 miles in optimum conditions it is ideal for use in environmentally sensitive areas, such as urban estates, city centres or even health resorts. The fact that it can carry seven passengers will widen its appeal to many businesses and will of course increase its carbon free credentials. Opportunities for its use in airports, large business complexes and man-made resorts that are environmentally aware are also easy to see.

The crewbus is a step beyond the VITO E-Cell vans that have been widely successful in trials as public vehicles in several German cities, and the safety element of the van is emphasised by the individual seat belts for each passenger. Another safety aspect is that an on-board computer will restrict the speed to a maximum of around 50 mph, fast enough to move with any urban traffic flow yet below the speed where the battery would drain quickly due to excess pressure on the balance of the vans engineering.

Prospective buyers of the crewbus will be able to get commercial vehicle insurance quotes on the van from May this year when the VITO E-Cell crewbus becomes available in 15 different European countries including the UK.

Turning water into liquid gold

Friday, January 13th, 2012

It may sound incredible but van drivers could soon be getting commercial vehicle insurance quotes for a van that is powered by water!

That is the scenario put forward by one entrepreneur who has devised a system based on the Hydrogen Fuel Cell that currently cuts emissions by over 90% and fuel usage by up to 50%. Richard Bird, the owner of Hydrotechnix, explained how the system works, saying “Petrol and diesel fuels are inherently inefficient, and a lot of the time there is unburnt fuel. The HHO gas burns much more quickly, cleanly and more powerfully. With three times the power of standard petrol or diesel, this in turn helps to fully ignite and burn the standard fuel going into the engine.

Also as the HHO can provide slightly improved power, you need less acceleration, therefore less fuel to go the same speed. Finally, as the bi-product of burning HHO is water (more specifically steam) this will cool the engine, making it run cooler, therefore more efficient, plus you get the a ‘steam cleaning’ effect on the old carbon deposits inside the engine, giving more benefits for the engine.”

He believes in time that a vehicle will be capable of running on bottled water alone but amazingly identified governments and oil companies as the biggest threat to his invention. He says the governments are scared of losing billions of pounds of revenue if his venture proves successful and of course oil companies would go out of business.

He revealed he has been inundated by offers from local businesses such as taxi firms and the company who run Reading buses but is determined to take his time in deciding what his favoured course of action will be. He said: “The product has TUV approval, the strictest approval system in the industry, and liability insurance from Lloyds of London. I am at the top of the mountain and I could go in 360 directions. We should be embracing this but governments and oil companies don’t want it.”

Police step up their no excuses campaign in Dorset

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

A year after Dorset police started their “No Excuse” campaign, they have announced that they are planning to unleash a new detection system which will help them catch even more drivers flouting the law.

Since January 2011, every motorist caught flouting traffic laws has been given the chance to pay £60 for a driver safety course and avoid getting three points on their licence. The scheme has been welcomed by many professional drivers who would prefer to pay £60 rather than get points on their licence plus the prospect of higher commercial vehicle insurance quotes. Extra officers have been working near collision hotspots to clamp down on drivers who are speeding, using mobile phones, not wearing seatbelts and drink/drug driving. Now in a further step ten police vans have been fitted with new lasers which will allow a traffic officer to detect from a much longer distance whether a driver is using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt while driving. Senior police officers feel the device will help boost detection and spread the message to drivers that they have a responsibility to drive safely on the roads of Dorset.

Brian Austin is the campaign manager and he said: “We have seen an 18% reduction in casualties when compared with months before the campaign started. We’re not saying it’s all down to No Excuse, but it has contributed towards the reduction in casualties. Other counties’ casualty rates have reduced by 8%, Dorset is significantly more. The aim is to change the way drivers act. With safety cameras, traffic officers and road safety officers we want to make people more aware of the risks they face when driving.”

Dorset Police have spent £200,000 on advertising to drive home the message of the dangers of the road. During the first year of the campaign 13,500 offences were processed with 22% for seatbelt offences and 16% for mobile phone offences. The campaign has highlighted the bad excuses drivers have given for their poor driving. One driver who was caught doing 43mph in a 30 zone claimed she was speeding to get home to check she hadn’t left her tap running. while another said he was racing home to feed his dogs.

Cameras turned back on and it’s no joke

Monday, April 4th, 2011

Van drivers in and around Oxfordshire will have to be on their mettle once again this morning, as an old foe has once more raised its head. Although many van drivers listening to the news this morning may have thought it was an April fool’s Day joke it is in fact true that Thames Valley Police have turned back on all 72 of their fixed site road cameras.

It will be the first time since August 2010 that motorists in the County will be under surveillance from roadside cameras and the spectre of higher commercial vehicle insurance quotes for some drivers with points on their driving licence will once more be a possibility.

The cameras were turned off originally because of cuts to the Road Safety budget by the Government. However, statistics show that road accidents and the number of people killed in them has risen dramatically since the cameras were shut down. The number of people killed in accidents is particularly disturbing as it has risen by 50%.

Rob Povey, head of roads policing for the Thames Valley force, said “We think this is important because we know that speed kills and speed is dangerous.

“We have shown in Oxfordshire that speed has increased through monitoring limits and we have noticed an increase in fatalities and the number of people seriously injured in 2010. We know that speed enforcement does work as a deterrent to motorists.”

The figures make it difficult to argue with the decision and it is a question now of how many other police forces and Local Authorities follow the same path when it comes to road safety.
