Thieves Target Van Exhaust Systems

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Commercial vehicle insurance providers are warning van drivers in the North East to keep their vehicles under strong surveillance as thieves launch a crime spree on vehicle exhausts.

As the insurance companies report a spate of claims, police officers from Cleveland Police say thieves may be stealing exhaust systems from vehicles in the area and selling them in London and the South East. They think unscrupulous people looking to avoid penalty charges from the London Emission Zone compliance scheme are buying the stolen parts.

Brian Callendar, owner of Stockton Tees Valley Customs, is the latest victim of the crime spree. His paint and bodywork premises were broken into this week and the exhaust systems from two Mercedes sprinter vans were stolen. The catalytic converters on the vans had special filters which mean the vehicles could travel in the London Emission Zone without penalty and Brian who has been in the business for 25 years is convinced this is why his premises were targeted.

He said: “It seems like they are going into compounds where there’s a lot of vehicles and taking the same part. I’ve heard of a business which had 17 of them taken. I don’t think it’s for the metal value, I think it’s because the DPF particle filter allows them to be driven in London. They may well be pinching them off vehicles in the north for the market down there. The lads who repaired my vehicles for me said they have had quite a few in recently, all with the same part missing. I don’t think it’s specifically Mercs – it’s just anything with these converters on.”

A spokesman for the Cleveland Police admitted that three premises had suffered similar break-ins over the last few days and enquiries were proceeding.

Cameras turned back on and it’s no joke

Monday, April 4th, 2011

Van drivers in and around Oxfordshire will have to be on their mettle once again this morning, as an old foe has once more raised its head. Although many van drivers listening to the news this morning may have thought it was an April fool’s Day joke it is in fact true that Thames Valley Police have turned back on all 72 of their fixed site road cameras.

It will be the first time since August 2010 that motorists in the County will be under surveillance from roadside cameras and the spectre of higher commercial vehicle insurance quotes for some drivers with points on their driving licence will once more be a possibility.

The cameras were turned off originally because of cuts to the Road Safety budget by the Government. However, statistics show that road accidents and the number of people killed in them has risen dramatically since the cameras were shut down. The number of people killed in accidents is particularly disturbing as it has risen by 50%.

Rob Povey, head of roads policing for the Thames Valley force, said “We think this is important because we know that speed kills and speed is dangerous.

“We have shown in Oxfordshire that speed has increased through monitoring limits and we have noticed an increase in fatalities and the number of people seriously injured in 2010. We know that speed enforcement does work as a deterrent to motorists.”

The figures make it difficult to argue with the decision and it is a question now of how many other police forces and Local Authorities follow the same path when it comes to road safety.

Fear for small businesses as toll increase looms

Monday, October 4th, 2010

Van drivers with commercial vehicle insurance could be set for an increase in Humber Bridge tolls after proposed increases across the entire six vehicle categories were announced by Humber bridge officials.

Documents seen by the Grimsby Telegraph also reveal further plans to combine the classifications, making three groups instead of six, and the changes mean that small businesses are set to be the hardest hit.

The Humber Bridge was opened in July 1981 and if the plans are given the green light it will see the bridge being the most expensive toll crossing in Great Britain. The charges would go up by 11% to £3 each way for cars from April 1st 2011.

Many small businesses are already under pressure at the moment because of the current economic climate and increasing the tolls will only make the problem worse. They fear it will kill their trade as it will make it difficult and costly for them to do any business across the river.

Business owners who regularly cross the bridge in their vans have reacted angrily to the new proposals. Ron Rookledge, who owns East Yorkshire Cleaning, said “If I get a cleaning inquiry from over there I go across and do a quote first and then go back and do the job. That means four trips across and that puts additional cost on me. With this extra cost I would try to do telephone quotes but, to be honest, my success rate doing that drops. It might be that I would start looking at not going at all. There is no incentive for small business in the East Riding area, just this additional cost. It’s unfair to businesses and it’s unfair to customers who don’t benefit from fair competition.”

The Humber Bridge Board stated the reclassification of vehicles makes it much easier for drivers and it will simplify the charges. Some vehicles will pay more and some will pay less, there will be some winners and some losers. The board also claims it has been forced to apply for the toll increases as they have to pay off its £330 million debt to the government.

Ice cream van for dogs

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Think of vans associated with dogs and the mind immediately goes to the council dog catcher or perhaps a mobile pet grooming business, well the world is about to see a new van designed for dogs starting this weekend.

It is well documented that the UK is a nation of animal lovers and owners of dogs in the capital have the chance to indulge their canine chums that little bit more than usual. This Saturday, July 24th at the Boomerang Pets Party in Regents Park, London, visitors will see the launch of the UK’s one and only ice cream van for dogs! Yes dogs. The name of the ice cream van, well naturally it has to be K99.

The van will be visiting dog and owner events all over the country this summer in a bid to cool both canine and human brows as the nation basks in the hottest temperatures for some time. Whether the vendor has to have special commercial vehicle insurance to serve dogs is another matter altogether.

Of course the canine gourmets will be offered a very special sort of ice cream. The van owners have researched the topic thoroughly and hit upon what they believe is the perfect flavour. What is the flavour? A scrumptious concoction of gammon and chicken ice cream served in a traditional cone and topped with that favourite treat, a biscuit bone. Enough to set the saliva glands of any family pet running at full pelt.

How exactly the dogs will handle paying for the treat and eating it will be a test no doubt and it’s to hope serviettes will be available.

Whatever next!

Used vans a vehicle of choice!

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

A report from one of Britain’s universities suggests that more van drivers than ever could be looking for cheap commercial vehicle insurance in the future, as used vans could well be in high demand and the vehicle of choice for many businesses.

A team led by Professor Peter Cooke at the University of Buckingham’s Centre for Automotive Management, believe that second hand commercial vehicles will become highly sought after vehicles because of their career longevity.

The report was published by British Car Auctions (BCA), who sends significant numbers of light commercial vehicles through their auctions, and backs up their own findings.

Duncan Ward BCA’s general manager for commercial vehicles, said that vans were more and more becoming part and parcel of everyday business life, with used vans being the preferred choice of small and medium size companies who can’t justify expenditure on new vehicles. He went on to say “Used LCVs also have a significantly longer ‘business life’ than cars, two or three more businesses using them, whereas cars typically have just one business user before being sold to a private motorist.”

The average price for a second hand van going through auctions in June was around £4,300, a drop on the 2010 highs achieved in April which were a couple of hundred pounds more, but still healthy when compared to 2009 figures. In the same period, new van sales continue to grow as companies who have held on to old vehicles through the financial downturn are eventually returning to the showrooms to buy new motors.
