Technology Can Play a Big Part in Fighting Congestion in the Future

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

Fleet managers are being advised to embrace technology if they are to combat the increasing levels of congestion on the roads of the United Kingdom. The Department for Transport (DfT) predicts that by 2030, the number of vehicles on the road will have increased by between 25% and 30%.

The Automotive Council has published a report recognising the increasing role of intelligent transport systems used by fleets, such as real-time vehicle tracking and they also predict that these will need to interact with both new and emerging technologies. Nearly 84% of goods bought online are delivered using the UK’s road network by vans which are protected by commercial vehicle insurance and it is vital that the transport networks do not become clogged or gridlocked. Effective transport infrastructure, which enables drivers to move freely around the country, says the report, is a necessary ingredient of a successful economy.

Transport secretary Justine Greening said “We’re making great headway on the environmental impact of road transport. Improvements in fuel efficiency and the development of hybrid electric vehicles mean that, despite an increase in traffic, CO2 emissions are set to fall significantly over the next 25 years. But perhaps our biggest challenge, given its economic, environmental and social cost, is making sure we tackle congestion. That means we all need to focus on solutions – be they managing demand, enabling travellers to make more informed decisions about their journeys and making the best use of existing networks and capacity.”

Currently, the DfT is investing more than £1 billion to tackle areas of congestion and improve the national road network. This is on top of the £2.3bn planned investment in major roads that was recently announced in the ministry’s spending review. The Government is also collaborating with Innovits and MIRA at a research and development centre located in Nuneaton. The team of researchers hope to develop, test and refine future transport technologies. The report emphasises that increasing road capacity while tackling congestion requires everyone to use a more intelligent approach in managing the road network and the vehicles that ply their trade on it.

No Jams for Vans this Easter?

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

The run up to the Easter bank holiday has traditionally provided commercial vehicle owners with problems due to congested roads, however, traffic experts are predicting an easier time this year as several issues combine to promise free flowing motorways.

Despite a poll of 20,000 AA members indicating over 3 in 10 would be travelling over 50 miles on the Easter weekend; road experts believe traffic congestion will be at its lowest level for some years which should allow hauliers and delivery drivers to get their deliveries done in time to enjoy a holiday break of their own. The AA survey actually revealed that over 90% of drivers will stop in the UK this year but it seems the two week school holiday break means that those holidaying in the UK will stagger their departures over the coming week rather than all head off on the day before the bank holiday starts.

Van drivers can expect delays on the M5 in the South West as holiday makers head for Devon and Cornwall but the rest of the country is predicted to be congestion free with road works suspended to ease the traffic flow. The AA have reminded everyone though that accident rates increase over Easter and commercial drivers should ensure their van insurance is up to date. A spokesman for the AA said: “We believe forward planning by the Highways Agency, the threat of fuel shortages and the prolonged school break will lead to fewer problems this year with many families leaving home on different days. Good Friday is the day that could potentially be the worse but we don’t anticipate any serious delays.”

Van drivers can’t expect a total pain free Easter though because experts are predicting the recent panic buying of fuel coupled with the Bank holiday break will see fuel go up by as much as 10p a litre.

Fuel Pump Queues Develop after Minister’s Faux Pas

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Van drivers can expect longer than usual queues for petrol this morning after a government minister encouraged motorists to fill up whenever possible and store fuel in jerry cans.

With the threatened strike action by tanker drivers hanging over the country as it approaches the Easter break, motorists have started panic buying, causing long queues at petrol stations throughout the country and leading to some garages running out of fuel. Commercial drivers accustomed to driving to tight schedules are now facing delays due to what is now being described as ill thought advice by a cabinet minister.

Yesterday David Cameron chaired a meeting of ministers to discuss the implications of a strike by tanker drivers and it was after the meeting that Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude suggested drivers could prepare for a strike by filling up any spare Jerry cans they have full of fuel. The message was widely reported in the press and TV and within hours queues were developing at garage forecourts across the UK. Opposition MPs as well as motoring organisations were quick to criticise the minister’s statement saying not only was it scaremongering but dangerous. Safety experts confirmed that members of the public should not store that amount of fuel and van insurance providers said private delivery drivers should not be storing fuel in the same place as their vehicle at any time.

The Unite trade union that represents the tanker drivers involved in the dispute have been quick to say that no date for a strike has been announced and they are hopeful that the dispute won’t even lead to a strike. They also pointed out the public would have plenty of time to fill their tanks up anyway as they would have to give seven days notice of any strike action.

“Games Lanes” not a winner with London residents

Friday, June 17th, 2011

A recent survey by the Daily Telegraph has highlighted that the citizens of London are none too pleased about the plans designed by the Transport for London (TfL) committee to segregate Olympic VIPs from the general motoring public while the Olympic Games take place.

9 in 10 of those questioned said they thought the plans were excessive and many tradesmen, with vehicles covered by commercial vehicle insurance, were concerned about their businesses being affected by the new road layouts.

The trouble emanates from the Transport for London plan to create special “Games Lanes” to be used by what the TfL describe as the “Olympic family”. In all 56 miles of London’s roads will be put aside for the officials and VIPs to use when the games are on. Motorists and cyclists will face fines of up to £200 if they stray into the lanes when they are in use.

Van drivers are up in arms about the decision. Deliveries are bound to be affected as the cargo of VIPs ensconced in hotels in the middle of London are ferried out to the east end where the games will take place. There has already been talk of protests and it does seem that businesses likely to be affected do have a valid point.

Employers have been asked to allow employees to work from home where possible to alleviate the congestion on the roads. Government departments are leading the way on this with 4 out of 10 civil servants working in the capital to be offered this opportunity but this is obviously not an option for a delivery driver.

There is a public consultation document available for citizens to comment but it is unlikely that the plans will now be altered.
