Advanced Driving Techniques Will Aid Fuel Economy

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

As commercial drivers continue to struggle operating a business with overheads almost impossibly high, one of the UK’s leading road safety campaigning groups once again stress the benefits of advanced driving techniques.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) believes drivers can sometimes be their own worst enemy when it comes to fuel costs and advocate several simple driving tips that could save motorists running their own businesses thousands of pounds over the course of a year. The tips are all based on data derived from professional sources and are all eminently easy procedures for drivers who spend a lot of time on the road.

IAM first of all advise drivers to check their tyres on a regular basis and always before setting out on long journeys. Under inflated tyres are dangerous and can put fuel consumption up by 3%. Always stick to the speed limit, doing this will not only save petrol (the difference between 70 mph and 85 mph can be as much as a litre of fuel every 20 miles) but also make you a safer driver, less liable to be involved in accidents and more likely to get cheap van insurance. Use cruise control for long days of travelling but remember to turn it off when going up steep inclines. Switch off your engine if you are constantly stop starting in urban traffic and always remember to cut down on clutter; the more weight you are pulling the more fuel you will consume.

All quite simple and common sense according to IAM chief Executive Simon Best who said: “Green driving techniques can easily improve fuel efficiency by up to 10%. In other words, if the monthly price of filling up is typically two tanks at £70 each – an advanced driver can save £14 a month. For professional drivers and those in haulage and delivery the savings would be considerably more.”

Van Drivers Advised Not to Eat Behind the Wheel

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

A new report issues a stark warning to commercial drivers across the UK that eating while driving can be more dangerous than using a mobile phone or even drink driving.

Researchers from the University of Leeds have discovered that eating when behind the wheel of a van can slow reactions by as much as 44% and drinking can slow reactions by up to 22%. The trials showed that in both cases drivers lost a great degree of lane control, some by as much as 18%. Professor Samantha Jamson led the study and said: “It is accepted that the distraction of talking on a hand-held mobile phone may increase accident risk. However, other activities that involve taking one hand off the wheel, such as eating or drinking, may also cause distraction. Drivers take their eyes off the road in order to reach for or un-wrap items.”

Drivers who typically hold commercial vehicle insurance are particularly vulnerable to eating and drinking behind the wheel. Many hauliers and delivery drivers encounter hold ups in their working day and then try to make up time by snacking behind the wheel instead of taking a proper break. A spokesman for the Freight Transport Association said: “Of course some people take risks when trying to make up for lost time, but no-one condones it, and a driver who relies on his driving licence for his living is usually less likely to put it at risk.”

While eating, drinking and smoking behind a wheel have not been outlawed yet, there is a growing lobby that believe they should be viewed in the same way as drink driving and using a hand held mobile phone. At the moment police forces can charge a driver who loses control of his car while eating or drinking with careless driving but a law change could be imminent.

Van drivers facing detours in East Cornwall

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

Residents in a Cornish town are up in arms over a decision to close their main street to traffic for over three months.

Villagers in Looe, East Cornwall have been told the main road into the town will be closed from next week until April 5th to enable property developers to lay sewage and drainage systems for a new building plot. The news has come out of the blue to the great majority of the townspeople but house builder Barratts and South West Water (SWW) say there is no alternative but to lay the pipes under the main road.

A spokesman for SWW said: “We have to provide a connection which will not place other customers at risk of sewer flooding and it means the road needs excavating. We will work with Barratt Homes, the local highway authority and residents to minimise the inconvenience.”

Shopkeepers in the town are appalled at the news and delivery drivers and other commercial traders who are already struggling with ancillary motoring costs such as fuel and commercial van insurance will now find their businesses under threat unless a solution is found very quickly. Armand Toms. a councillor for East Looe. said villagers were outraged at the plans and warned Barratts and SWW: “They need to come and explain themselves to the people of Looe. They were happy to speak when they wanted to get planning permission and then it all seems to have gone out of the window.

“It is the impact on our lives – like having to drive an extra seven miles to take the children to school or get to the doctors. The town’s businesses will feel the pinch with the main areas of housing cut off, except via a narrow alternative along Barbican Hill”

The townspeople have put forward alternative plans but have still to hear from Barratts and SWW.

Renault is ready for the future with announcement of new EV dealerships

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

Renault has now launched the Kangoo Van ZE, it is the first of its four strong Electric Vehicle (EVs) impressive line up and it will be on show in all the first wave of United Kingdom Renault dealerships that specialise in EVs. Twenty-one electric vehicle sites have all been branded as ZE Expert and are now ready to offer the full range of sales and after-sales services for Renault’s electric vehicle the Kangoo Van ZE.

Each of the twenty-one sites will have fully trained staff that will be able to answer any question that fleet managers may have as well as offering advice on making the most of the benefits associated with running an electric fleet, including the environmental and financial factors. There will be a minimum of two fully trained ZE sales specialists to guide interested private and business customers through the funding and charging options, along with battery hire plans to calm any concerns over the performance and replacement costs. All ZE Expert sites will have a Kangoo Van ZE available for test drives, so that fleet managers can experience for themselves the differences of driving an electric vehicle. Renault are aware that there will be a number of electric vans on the market in the coming years and fleet managers will be making comparisons between the different choices before looking for a cheap van insurance quote.

Thierry Sybord, managing director of Renault UK, said “I’m delighted to see so many of our dealers embracing this new era of electric transport. With a full range of four fully-electric models set to launch in the UK in less than one year, we have high hopes for our ZE range. I’m sure our ZE Expert dealers will reap the rewards on both sales and after-sales and we look forward to charging ahead with them in the months and years ahead as we seek to attract as many electric vehicle buyers as possible.”

The dealerships have also brought in specialist ramps and equipment to deal with the service and maintenance of electric vehicles. Renault has also invested in three new charging points at each site. One will be in the workshop, one in the demonstrator area and one in the car park. The charging point in the car park will also be accessible for all EV customers to use.

Regulation on drivers set to be relaxed

Friday, December 16th, 2011

The way vehicles and drivers are regulated in the UK is set to transform drastically as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and the Department for Transport (DfT) have collaborated to cut down on the amount of red tape surrounding road users in the UK.

In all the DfT announced 142 diverse changes to road and driver regulations yesterday which ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous. For instance public transport officials no longer have to hold perishable food for 48 hours before they can throw it away and motorists will no longer have to complete an annual Statutory Off Road Notification, but it was other measures that will attract the attention of commercial drivers.

One of the big changes will affect professional drivers such as van drivers and lorry drivers who require a Certificate of Professional Competence. The Government propose to look at how other countries legislate this particular group of drivers and it is expected the DVLA will recommend that the numbers of drivers requiring the CPC will be cut.

There will be changes that affect commercial vehicle insurance too, as the Government look to discard the paper part of a driving licence and the piece of paper called an insurance certificate that at the moment is required by all drivers, private and commercial. Just dispensing with these two pieces of documentation will save the motoring population of the UK over £10 million and thousands of frustrating hours in queues.

Justine Greening, the transport secretary, said “The measures have been taken after completing wide consultations, reducing the number of rules and regulations in our life is absolutely vital to removing barriers to economic growth and increasing individual freedoms.”

Council take first steps to a greener future

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Local councils in Perth and Kinross have made a pledge to copy their counterparts in Canada and Germany by switching to greener technology and move away from diesel and petrol vehicles.

Trials have already started with the dog control team who are using two new vans, one powered by electric, the other using a hybrid engine and both covered by vehicle insurance cover. The change to green fuel may pose some problems in the coming months for the local authority because efforts in the Highlands to have a fleet of vehicles powered by electric were cut short during last year’s harsh winter. The vehicles used had to be taken off the road because they could not cope with the low temperatures, but it is a problem that the council are aware of, and one that they are confident of resolving.

Head of environmental and consumer services Keith McNamara said: “There is still some way to go before the council is in a position to replace its entire fleet. I would like to say that all refuse collection vehicles will be LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) soon, but technology is still not at that stage. Electric and hybrid cars are fine to an extent, but we need to have something that will deliver what we need and when we need it. At the moment, we don’t quite have the technology.”

Two months ago councillors backed plans to apply for almost £500,000 to establish a three year project to cut air pollution caused by heavy goods vehicles. Under the scheme, deliveries would be made to a central location before being brought into the town by an electric vehicle or one with a cleaner engine. Supporters of the scheme feel that by doing this it will go some way to cutting the one thousand lorries that enter Perth on five days of the week.

Upgrade to A9 can’t come soon enough

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Commercial businesses and motoring organisations in Scotland are united in welcoming proposed improvements to the A9 announced last week in the Scottish Parliament.

The road which stretches for over 200 miles from Edinburgh in the south to John o’Groats in the north was known as the spine of Scotland until the introduction of motorways and road improvements in the south. However, the stretch from Pitlochry to Perth is still a vital commerce link and thousands of vehicles covered by commercial vehicle insurance use it every day. This stretch not only experiences traffic jams daily but is known as an accident black spot. It is this part of the road that attracted the attention of the Scottish Government’s capital spending plan and the announcement of a £3 billion investment will see the road dualled for the majority of its length.

Although work won’t start for another five years traffic experts welcomed the move unanimously. Neil Greig, from the Institute of Advanced motoring (IAM), said the decision was great news for Scotland’s business community adding: “Our priority has been to see the A9 dualled from Pitlochry to Perth, particularly from Dunkeld in the first instance. This stretch of road sees great ‘platooning’ of traffic behind vehicles and is even greater towards Perth. Traffic builds up – there is a lack of overtaking on some stretches and you have articulated lorries who have a 40mph speed limit holding everyone up.”

The A9 is only one of many road projects the Scottish Government are planning and its long term aim is to have the entire Scottish network of major roads dualled by 2030.

Demand for winter tyres set to increase

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Once again the demand for winter tyres from commercial vehicle fleets is on the increase and Kwik-Fit, who won an award last year for their comprehensive service, is still recognised as one of the best in the industry.

Kwik-Fit Fleet only started their winter tyre programme in 2010 and because it was so successful they are repeating the initiative again this winter. The service includes offering fleets a hotel style facility to store all of their summer tyres when the weather is at its worst. The use of winter tyres has been in the spotlight again recently as the United Kingdom prepares for another harsh winter and it was Kwik-Fit who were first to offer fleet operators the option that will not only help keep vans on the road during winter but could also save lives.

Kwik-Fit Fleet has won another award at the Van Fleet Safety Awards. The award comes at a time when Kwik-Fit is investing money in order to improve their service to the commercial sector. During the past twelve months they have seen vehicle servicing and MoT work increase by a staggering 40% on vans typically covered with van insurance, demand for LCV tyre sales go up by 20% and van brake repair and replacement work has increased by a quarter.

Kwik-Fit Fleet Sales Director, Peter Lambert, said “No other fast fit company has the network coverage or offers such a comprehensive range of services that we have available to operators of light commercial vehicles. We are delighted that the Safety Award recognises not only our winter tyre programme but also our range of risk management services that are designed to keep vehicles on the road and aid corporate legislative compliance. Our ethos is based on delivering a menu of easily accessible car and LCV based services at a reasonable price accompanied by first class customer service.”

Fleet Operators call for Government to think again on tax charge

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Members of an association with a vested interest in commercial vehicle insurance have this week called on the Government to scrap a tax surcharge they feel is damaging the industry.

The Association of Car Fleet Operators (ACFO) is calling on the government to put an end to the 3% diesel company car benefit-in-kind tax surcharge. ACFO believe the tax is outdated as the benefits from driving a diesel vehicle as opposed to a petrol car have virtually disappeared and that the new breed of diesel vehicles is competitive on CO2 emissions in any case. They are also worried that when the Euro 6 emission compliance standards are introduced in 2014 that diesel cars will in actual fact become more expensive than petrol models due to modification needs.

Julie Jenner, the Chairman of ACFO, is adamant the tax should be scrapped saying: “There are no valid reasons for today’s diesel models to carry a three percent company car benefit-in-kind supplement. It was introduced almost a decade ago for reasons that no longer exist. Personal budgets are being squeezed, and evidence suggests that average company car mileage is reducing. If drivers can save money by selecting a petrol-engined model in comparison with a diesel car they will make that choice. Ultimately, the Government’s decision to retain the three percent supplement may prove to be counter productive and the tax-take will reduce.”

ACFO also called upon Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to alter the 3 year notice of benefit in kind taxation to be extended to 5 years as they claim many fleet operators are now extending the replacement cycle of their fleets due to the current financial position.

Charity hope to save money by spending money

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Animal welfare charity, the RSPCA, will be installing Trimble’s Telematics technology and Geo safety devices into all of their vehicles to help workers rescue and collect animals of all shapes and sizes throughout England and Wales.

The installation will start this month, with their transit vans being the first to benefit from real-time visibility of the location of the vehicle. This will help dispatchers make an informed decision about which vehicle is best equipped and also closest to an animal who is in need of assistance. The system will also help with the RSPCA’s charitable objectives. Directors of the charity believe the systems will benefit the RSPCA with greater effectiveness in fleet management through reduced fuel use and lower CO2 emissions; the anticipated lower mileage may even bring down the cost of their annual commercial vehicle insurance bill.

As a charitable organisation, the RSPCA need to be as cost effective as possible, and using Telematics technology will help them achieve a much more efficient operation. They will also be able to identify any potential faults before a breakdown happens, keeping vehicle downtime to a minimum while at the same time optimising the effectiveness of their fleet.

Nigel Yeo, director of operations at the RSPCA, said “It is incredibly important that we make the most of every penny we receive in charitable donations. Investing in Telematics technology can help our inspectors in their daily work. RSPCA field staff can spend many hours on the road travelling to deal with complaints of cruelty or to attend to an abandoned animal. Some of the locations can be remote or difficult to find and having technology that enables us to find who is the closest at any given time will mean an animal is found much more quickly and this can help our staff enormously.”
